Our Story

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

As we go into our third year since starting Trim the Wick I feel such joy thinking of the wonderful experiences I’ve had, from creating candles and new products, to amazing markets where I’ve met many wonderful customers. It is a constant reminder of why I started this business, to create quality products with natural ingredients, and to connect with my community.

Five years ago I was in a low point in my life, emotionally, physically, financially, I felt as if the world would crumble under my feet and the only thing holding me together was my maternal instinct to keep my child fed and healthy, just when I felt depression couldn’t drag me any lower, a skunk fell into my basement and sprayed in the furnace room, in February, when the heat was on. I woke up at 3 am to a screaming baby and a house that reeked so bad my eyes were watering and my stomach turning. Who knew, I could actually go even lower, the days that followed were a nightmare.

As the weeks and months went by and I forced myself to work, clean, feed, bathe, I slowly, very slowly, felt the desire to enjoy my home again, skunk stink free. And so, I researched natural air purifiers, studied the power of essential oils and aromatherapy, created candles that cleaned the air, scented my environment, gave me warmth.

What followed was magic, as I started regaining my joy in life and started living in the moment, burning a candle while I read books to my daughter, while I cleaned my home, while I studied aromatherapy, burning a candle became a constant reminder that life changes and wasn’t going to be a skunk disaster forever.

Trim the Wick is so much more than a business to me, it’s my creative outlet, it’s the extra income I need as a single parent, it’s my reminder to always do my best but never beat myself up if I fail, it’s how I connect with fellow makers and the community around me, and so much more.

I feel grateful for every opportunity I have had since starting Trim the Wick, and I look forward to connecting with more people as the years go by.

I would love to hear from you! Send me your story, do you love candles as much as I do? When is your favourite time to burn a candle?

Xx

Ana
